Interpersonal Relationships
Welcome or welcome back to Desktop Chats!
Hello again, we are back at it this week and this time I want to talk about how online communication has impacted one of my relationships that I deeply value and which stage of Knapp's Relational Model it best fits.
I want to share my relationship with my sister, and why I think we are at the bonding stage. My sister and I have always been close having grown up sharing the same room until I was 16 and she was 12, we naturally just became interested in each other's lives and found hobbies that we could share together. I was recently the maid of honor at her wedding, and we currently meet up biweekly for our D&D campaign. It's honestly so funny because I feel like we easily bounce from bonding to differentiating and then back again every once in a while, sometimes life gets a little hectic for both of us and we part ways for a while, but we eventually meet back up and pick up where we left off last.
Online communication has allowed us to remain in each other's lives despite not meeting up or seeing each other as often. Instagram has been a great platform for us. I don't post very much, if at all, but she does and I feel like I can see tidbits of her life as they happen and it gives us a starting topic when I see her again. Do you, or have you ever, just had a relationship with someone where you talk almost exclusively through memes or videos? That's us, we send each other funny videos from Instagram or Tik Tok, usually centered around golf memes or hilarious animals, and each message is so curated to the other its like our own language 😅
Interpersonal relationships are going to vary between every person in your life and the stages they go through, either coming together or coming apart. Relationships can bounce back and forth between the "ladders" so never feel bad if a relationship you value is on the decline, it could bounce back up with time.
That's all I have to say on this post. I look forward to doing this again next week. Byyyeeeeee!
